Lord Darling's Famous Cases. By Dudley Barker. (Hutchinson. 8s. 6d.) Reviewed by REGINALD C. S. ELLISON This book contains accounts of seventeen of the more well-known cases which the late Lord Darling tried, or heard on appeal. Here we have Major Armstrong, the Brides in the Bath, Casement, Bottomley, " Chicago May," and others whose deeds are the stand-by_ of the evening press whenever it imagines that current social happenings are not sufficiently tragic for its purpose. Special reference is made in each case to the contribution of the famous judge to the trial, with examples of his interjections during its course.
Occasionally one does not share the satisfaction which the author displays. Some will not feel that the quotation of Milton is .a triumphant conclusion to the trial of Casement. The extreme pleasure shown in recording a judgment in favour of a certain Labour leader in a libel action is .published unfortunately close to an enquiry in which a Cabinet Minister's honour was at stake.
