ENTERPRISE AND POLISH

THE series of Macnaghten Con THE series of Macnaghten Con certs, held mainly at the Arts Council and the R.B.A. Galleries, can be accused of everything but lack of enterprise. Since tromote music by British composers nearly every concert contains a first performance, but even the rest of the programme can hardly be called "popular". Last Friday's concert, for instance, included quartets by Kenneth Regan and Shostakovich, and three Humbert Wolfe settings by Hoist. The first performance (in England) on this occasion was Lennox Berkeley's setting of five poems by W. H. Auden. Although not startling in idiom, they offer plenty of the lyricism for which Berkeley has become so well-known. They found a sympathetic interpreter in Nancy Evans,
