Avebury hits at Indonesia

Lord Avehury has added his weight to the growing band of critics attacking the British government's policy towards the self determination of the people of East Timor.

In a letter to The Times, Lord Avebury condemns Indonesian aggression against the country, which has a high proportion of Catholics, and goes on to say: "The mast crucial issue today is for Western governments .. , to press for immediate withdrawal of Indonesian troops from East Timor, and to work to create the necessary conditions for the people of the war-torn country to exercise their right to self determination."

According to the letter, news of a new offensive has recently come from Church sources in the country. Another report, the letter says. "details gross human rights violations by Indonesian troops and widespread corruption and malpractices by Indonesian military personnel in charge of the economy."
