Released youth leader receives

a gold badge

The Gold Badge of Honour has been awarded by the German Catholic Youth Association to Manfred Klein, leader of the Berlin group, who was recently released after nine years' imprisonment in the Soviet Zone, Cardinal Frings, Archbishop of Cologne, and Prince Karl von Loewenstein, president of the Central Committee of German Catholics, were at the presentation ceremony.

Manfred Klein was sentenced by a Soviet military tribunal to 25 years' imprisonment. The charges were never made clear.

Recent changes in East German policy resulted in his release after years of protests by Catholic leaders.
