Cathedral reopens

A CATHOLIC cathedral almost 100 years old has been reopened in Canton, the daily Yang-cheng Evening News reported recently.

About 300 Chinese and foreigners attended a December 12 opening Mass, the newspaper said.

The Mass was celebrated by illicitly ordained Bishop Ye Y in -Y un . Bishop Ye was "elected" to the Canton post by members of the National Association of Patriotic

Catholics, a governmentapproved organisation which rejects ties to the Vatican.

The Vatican-appointed head of the Canton archdiocese. Archbishop Dominic Tang Yee-Ming, has not been readmitted to China from Hongkong since his appointment by Pope John Paul to 1981 Archbishop Tang, who once was imprisoned by the

Chinese communist

government, had gone to Hongkong for medical

treatment.
