Jokingly, Fr, Cyril Plummer, the parish priest at Uoldield, Sussex, suggested that children could bring their buckets and spades to help dig the foundations of the new Church of Our Lady Imnuiculate and St. Philip Ned. Sixty of them did, working alongside adult volunteers from the parish.
On Friday the Apostolic Delegate, Archbishop O'Hara, laid the foundation stone of the new church. It will meat 400, with a Mass Chapel for 60 behind the high altar.
The church Is to incorporate a special Lourdes Centenary Memorial Chapel intended to be (he week-day chapel.
Many artists and craftsmen friends of Fr. Plummer are cooperating in the work, and he hopes that perhaps it will become another great centre of prayer and pilgrimage in the county of 'Sussex. This picture Is the architect's idea of the finished dusch.
