This unique photograph of Lourdes is taken from what is called "Our Lady's Letter-Box," the recess in the grotto where pilgrims drop their petitions. Our Lady appeared on the left above the spot where in the picture a pilgrim is kissing the rock. The end of the new altar can be seen on the right.
The next great ceremony at Lourdes in this Jubilee Year will be on the feast of the Annuncia
tion, March 25, when Cardinal ' Ronealli will bless the great underground Basilica of St. Pius X.
In France the hope has been expressed that the liturgical spirit which has spread throughout the country, even in the smallest and humblest churches, will be fully expressed in Lourdes this year.
The construction and style of the new Basilica is in harmony
with contemporary liturgical outlook. The grotto itself no longer possesses ornaments and features of questionable taste, and the Bishop has replaced the old altar with an impressively plain liturgical one. It is expected that these changes are forerunners of a Lourdes which will bring to pilgrims from all over the world the liturgical beauty and communal worship in which France has been for some years a leading example.
