100,000 Books

TO-DAY there are about 100.000

volumes in the missionary library of the Congregation "de Propaganda Fide," although it was only begun a little over 30 years ago.

Pope Pius XI was reponsible for its inception when he ordered Fr. Robert Streit, 0.M.1., to gather a selected mission library of some 30.000 volumes for the Vatican Mission Exposition of the Holy Year of 1925, and at the end of the year most of these books were handed aver to the Congregation as a foundation for the Pontificia Biblioteca Missionaria di Propaganda Fide. About half the present number of 100.000 volumes arc books concerning the missions or books which came from mission lands ; there are 30,000 bound copies of mission periodicals, and 20.000 books and brochures in 291 nonF.uropean languages. About 500 mission periodicals from all countries today provide a present-day picture of the world mission slice Con.

Aids to users of the library include indexes of authors and subjects, a catalogue of mission periodicals. and the Bibeiografiu Missionaria, which has been appearing annually since 1934 and which is compiled by Fr. Rommer skirchen. O.M.L. and his assistants in the library.
