AMUSEMENT was caused in America on
the occasion of the centenary celebrations of the great Jesuit Fordham University.
Heidelberg, Bonn, Berlin and several other German universities were Invited to send delegates along with those of other countries. but none of the German universities answered the invitation.
When seven months went by with no answer from the German institutions, Fr. Dumas wrote to Dr. Wilhelm Tannenberg, first secretary of the German Embassy, asking if a priest on the Fordham staff. who is a graduate of the University of Berlin, might serve as delegate from that university.
The answer came: " I regret to inform 'you that, probably due to the present university vacation in Germany, or other circumstances, an answer has not yet arrived. However, I hope to receive the permission any day and I shall at once inform you about it by cable."
Fordharn authorities said they expected sash permission would arrive after the cele
bration is over. But, then, we did put them on the spot," laughed one.
Jesuit scholastic institutions in Germany have of course suffered with other Catholic houses in the Nazi persecution.
