U.S.—Vatican diplomatic link urged

AN entire page of the Vatican daily paper, Osservatore Romano, was given over on Tuesday to an article which urges the restoration of full diplomatic relations between the United States and the Holy Sec. The article bears the signature of an American writer, John McMahon.

It recalls that a fully fledged U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See was named in 1848, at a lime when America was at war with Catholic Mexico, and that diplomatic relations were broken off only once—in 1867. "If the naming of a U.S, representative to the Vatican is as openly 'unAmerican' as its opponents say," the article says, "it is extraordinarily hard to explain why old United States patriots always allowed that close diplomatic link between the two Governments."

The article also says that today, since interest in this matter is renewed, it would be a good thing to remember that, in the past, diplomatic relations existed for 20 years without an infringement of principles from either side, and, in fact, should never have been broken off.
