PRESS . ATTACKS

New Body Needed

SIR,-May I he allowed to corn ment on the suggestion that the C.E.G. are the proper people to reply to Press attacks on the Faith. We are grateful for the compliment, but must make it clear thai our time and energy are fully extended in training speakers for the platform and in the platform work itself. I wish I could also say that our funds are likewise extended, but alas! they no longer exist.

Please may I say quite emphatically that we cannot undertake to answer attacks in the Press nor can we give advice to those zealous souls who wish to enter the fray but lack the necessary apologetic equipment. Nor will we give gratuitous advertisements to anti-Catholic lecturers by attending their meetings in order to heckle. Not that such work should not be done: it is just not our job.

My own conviction is that an association should he formed composed of experts: theologians, historians. lawyers, doctors and journalists. This association should have a team always on the watch and ready to go into action immediately a Press attack develops. The essentials are speed. accuracy and co-ordinated action. If my memory serves me, the Westminster Catholic Federation used to do something of this kind and it is a scandal that it is not being done now.

Ronald Flaxman,

Master, Catholic Evidence St. Peter's Hall, Cathedral Precincts, Westminster, London, S.W.I.
