Scatter seed on your own door-step

By Fr. George P. Dwyer, Superior of the Catholic Missionary Society VERY often the phone rings in the Mission House and a voice is heard asking for information about some distant mission field in Central Africa or in the Far East. We always have to tell them that they are ringing the wrong address and that though we are the Catholic Missionary Society our mission field is England and Wales.

This pronouncement is often followed by a baffled silence or a puzyled interrogation especially when the caller is not a Catholic. Even Catholics take some time to realise that raissioners are as urgently needed at home as overseas.

Home Mission Sunday on May 10 has been appointed by the Hierarchy precisely to bring home that realisation to all of us. Every Catholic is called to be a missionary. Not only priests but the laity, too, in these days especially. The laity live and work day in and day out among those who are not of the Faith.

They have the Faith and the others have not. They have the entry where the priest has not. If God gives us the Faith it is not so that we shall wrap the talent in a napkin and bury it in the ground. Every Catholic has to ask himself not only "How am I keeping the Faith?" but "What am I doing to spread it?"

Pick your targets

May 10 is the Sunday after the Feast.of the English Martyrs-men and women who gave their lives so that we might have the Faith.

May 10 is a Sunday in Our Lady's month, the Mother of Divine Grace, through whose hands Our Lord dispenses ail graces including the grace of conversion.

On May 10 go to Holy Communion and pray for cpnversions. Pray to Our Lady. Pray to the Martyrs. Ask yourself-what am 1 doing by prayer, by example, by selfsderifice for the conversion of others? Ask yourself-have I ever spoken to anybody about the Faith? Have I ever shown them in my own life how much the Faith means to me? Have I always been ready to answer their questions about the Faith? To take good-humouredly, maybe, their teasing about my Faith and to turn the joke into a serious opportunity of explaining the Faith? Pick out your targets for the year to come. Pick out one person or more for whom yotrintend to make a campaign of prayer, example and selfsacrifice. Scatter the seed wherever you may be. Some of it. maybe much of it, will not seem to bear fruit. But some of it will bear fruit a hundredfold. Ask God to give you the opportunity to work for conversions and be ready to seiae the opportunity when it comes.
