THERE are now 44,874,371 Catholics in the United States, according to the latest American Catholic Directory. This represents an increase of 1,026,433 over a period of a year, and an increase of 13,648,424 (or 41 5 per cent) over the past decade.
There are now 28 archdioceses and 120 dioceses in the 50 United States. with 244 members of the Hierarchy—an increase of seven— comprised of five cardinals, 32 archbishops and 207 bishops.
An increase of 788 in the clergy brings the total of priests to 57,328, and there arc now 17,445 Catholic parishes. Also listed are 4,594 missions, 1,502 stations, and 12,076 chapels.
Educational institutions amount to a record figure of 14,370 with 185 established in 1963. There are 112 diocesan seminaries, 459 reli
gious communities' seminaries, novitiates and scholasticates, and 295 colleges and universities.
The rest are ordinary schools at all levels, and there are 144 "protective" institutions caring for 17,443 young people.
Full-time teaching staffs of all Catholic educational institutes increased by 7,789 to a record total of 191,125 comprising 11,697 priests; 1,126 scholastics; 5,726 brothers; 104,441 sisters, and 68,135 lay teachers.
