IRAQ'S Islamic leaders have put the Pope's December pilgrimage to Ur of the Chaldees in jeopardy.
The trip to the reputed birthplace of Abraham has already met with hostility from Britain and the US, which do not want Saddam Hussein to be cast in a good light by a meeting with the Pontiff.
Now, leading Muslim clerics in Iraq have attempted to veto the visit by declaring it "inappropriate" and warning that the Pope would used as an "apologist for the West".
