THE POPE'S RECOVERY Amazing Work

follows Illness From Our Own Correspondent Rom E.

Monday, November 28, must be set down as the most. extraordinary day in the pontificate of Pius XI.

On that day there were ten private audiences, a public audience to Hungarian pilgrims which lasted for more than half-an-hour, and which included a vigorous discourse of exactly twelve minutes, and in the evening the Holy Father took part in the opening of the spiritual exercises.

To this public and semi-public work must be added the work at his desk and his private prayer.

"ARE YOU POPE ALREADY?"

The Hungarian' pilgrims had already been received by Cardinal Paccelli in the place of the Holy Father. When the Holy Father saw Cardinal Paccelli after that reception he is said to have asked the Cardinal jokingly : "Siete iiol gid, id Papa I" (" Are you Pope already?")

The colour of the Holy Father's face is paler than usual—in fact, almost the same colour as his cassock.

"You have come from distinguished people," said the Holy Father to the Hungarians, " from distinguished people, but not from distInguinhed Capitalists, since you are not dangerous Capitalists." (The pilgrims were nearly all of the peasant class.)
