Nuns raise funds for grants MODERN DAY NUNS are giving

away thousands of pounds to celebrate 100 years of nursing and teaching in Scotland.

The Sisters of Notre Dame and the Sisters of the Sacred Hearts of Jesus and Mary are offering education grants totalling £20,000 in a bid to encourage women to develop their talents and become leaders in their local church. They have already donated £30,000 to women across Scotland in the last two years to study subjects ranging from theology and reflexology to counselling and music.

The grants scheme offers help with book buying, course fees, childminding and travel for full and parttime courses.

Sr Anne Jane O'Rourke, whose Notre Dame sisters have taught generations of Scottish children and future teachers, said "We set up the fund as a way of celebrating our original calling to teach girls."
