Red nominees installed as Canons

FOUR new Canons of St. Vitus

Cathedral, Prague, were installed last week-end in a ceremony in the Cathedral—without the approval of the Archbishop, Mgr. Josef Beran.

The new Canons were Josef Kubik, Antonin Stehlik, Osvald Novak and Frantisek Kopalik. They wore appointed by the Czechoslovak Government's Office for Church Affairs.

An official spokesman claimed that Dr. Antonin Eltschkner, Auxiliary_ Bishop of Prague. was present at the ceremony. together with a number of " patriotic priests."

Mgr. Beran himself was not at the ceremony. The Vatican has refused to recognise any appointments by the Office for Church Affairs.

The new Canons replaced four who were sentenced recently to long terms elf imprisonment after conviction on charges of treason and espionage.
