Pope Paul has appointed Mr. Noel Charles, Administrator of Cafod, to act for the next three years as consultor to the Vatican Pontifical Council Cor Unum, created by the Holy Father in 1971, for co-ordinating the charitable work of the Church throughout the world.
It has a secretariat and a council composed of represen
tatives of all the major charitable bodies of the Church, together with bishops of the developing world. In addition, it has a number of consultants and expert advisers.
Mr. Charles, 55, has been Administrator of the Catholic Fund for Overseas Development (Cafod) since 1969. He was formerly in the Diplomatic Service as Deputy Difector of Information Services in the Middle East and later in the British Embassy in Rome.
He studied for the priesthood at the Beda College. Rome, but illness prevented his continuing. He then worked for the American bishops as project superviser for overseas aid.
