at or ac ev an is wi e Raisa have been placed alongside those of patron saints in a central Italian church.
Artist Fr Ugolino da Belluno, a Capuchin friar at the church of the Sacred Heart in Terni, to the north of Rome, said he began work on the mosaics last December after meeting the Soviet leaders at the Vatican.
"I put them in because Gorbachev is a great man: he eo ogy an reso vei con icts with the church," Fr Belluno said.
The 22-ton marble mosaic depicts the fashion conscious Raisa in a red suit and her husband in a natty blue pinstripe. The pair smile serenely at Pope John Paul II, who is dressed in white.
Above the earthly three is a scene from the Last Supper.
