ENGAGEMENTS Solemnised before the Altar

Recalling the hasty marriages of the last war and that many of them were not successful—she initial issue of the new Queen's Work, national Sodality organ published in St. Louis, America, urges canonical engagements as a substitute for weddings not well considered.

In its October number the Sodality organ reviews the seldom used formal and solemn engagement, in which a couple pledges its troth, before the altar, in the presence of two witnesses and a priest, and deposits a copy of the contract with the pastor of the girl's parish. Serious injury to either party invalidates the contract, which also may he dissolved by mutual agreement. The contract merely pledges the signatories to wed each ether at some future date.
