Teach the world to sing

OPERA star Placido Domingo was in the American capital this week to receive an honorary degree from the Jesuit-run Georgetown University.

Georgetown University's president, Fr Leo O'Donovan. said Domingo's efforts to bring opera to a wider audience through films and televised concerts had opened the hearts of people throughout the world. "Music is one of the most powerful forces in the rise of humankind and whoever renders it accessible to as many people as possible is a benefactor of humanity," Fr O'Donovan said.

More than 700 people attended the ceremony to bestow the honorary doctorate on the tenor, who said that music. like all forms of communication, could help avoid hatred and war.
