History counts for something too

YOUR editorial "The Word, Not the Man" (Catholic Herald, Sept 25), as well as exhibiting inaccuracies and inconsistencies, throws out the baby with the bathwater.

With scant regard for the Incarnation, you claim that interest in the historical background to Jesus's life has little to do with faith in him.

Your piece was provoked, it seems, by the work of Barbara Thiering, who makes absurd connection between Jesus and Qumran, and by the "biography" by AN Wilson, who offers some worthwhile material but makes sweeping and inaccurate assertions.

In reaction to such maverick publications it would have helped rather to call attention to the useful work of expert scholars, who little by little are ,adding to our knowledge of 1st century AD Palestine. Reliable historical data can only assist and build up faith in Jesus, the Word made flesh.
