Our vote-catching Cardinal Hume?

"EDUCATION reforms are meaningless unless the quality of school buildings where children are taught is improving".

The above might be a vote-catching remark from a socialist candidate, you might think.

But no, this statement is attributed to none other than His Eminence Cardinal Basil

Hume OSB ( Catholic Herald, Sept 18).

I was privileged to share with the future Cardinal Archbishop, together with others who have achieved much greater distinction than myself, the same insanitary lavatories, draught-ridden corridors, badly lit classrooms and Victorian desks but also the same dedicated teaching, both in the field of the Catholic faith and elsewhere.

In view of the total disarray of Catholic religious education over the past 30 years (my three children have all left the Church), may I suggest His Eminence has his priorities slightly wrong.
